Hey guys! Grace Nask here with Day 20 of the April Challenge. Today we have Apollo, Son of Zeus, which is a poem for all ages. It's about the struggles of being a cog in the system. So let's get to it!
Apollo, Son of Zeus
By: Sara Van Reymersdal Malinowski D
They’ve always told us
To reach for the stars,
But not how much it would
Hurt if we hit the ground again.
They told us we could be
Anything we wanted,
But when we shouted out, “Zeus!”, they
Laughed. “You can’t be
Zeus!” they chuckled. “You’re
Too young too old too plain too fat too dumb too weird
For Zeus! Pick anything else
But that.” So
We did. But not forever. For our own survival.
We chose to be Apollo, to attain not all the stars
But the one that sustains our lives.
They wanted to snuff out our fire, but
This isn’t something that dies
In the night. We are Apollo,
And so long as we have a sky,
We will light it.
They’ve always told us to reach for the stars.
And now we know how hard we can fall. But still
We stretch out our hands, so that
When we finally become Zeus, they’ll shine all the brighter.
