Thirteen-year-old Brenda Militant wants nothing more than to hang out with her friends, Emily and Kade, while keeping her crush on Kade a secret. This all changes when her ten-year-old sister, Kelsey, goes missing. Despite the police thinking she ran away, Brenda receives a note only she can see from the kidnappers telling her to find Kels in an abandoned mine shaft. This spurs on an epic adventure in battle of Brenda, Kade, and Emily against the kidnappers’ deadly traps. Through it all, they learn the meaning of love, the nature of friendship, and the power of trust.

A Hoot to Freedom

A Hoot to Freedom is about an orphan girl named Stacey who runs away from the orphanage, which she despises, in search of freedom she doesn’t have. When forced to bunk with owls to escape the bloodhound police following her, Stacey realizes there’s been something else missing in her life for far too long: the sense of family. Through Stacey and the owls’ many adventures, readers along with Stacey will learn some things are worth sacrificing for the ones you love, and what it really means to be home.

This is a middle grade/young adult story. (For tweens and younger teens.)
