Day 19 - Another Stupid Environmental Poem

Hey guys! Grace Nask here with Day 19 of the April Challenge. Today we have Another Stupid Environmental Poem, a poem (of course) for middle grade and above. It's about the effects our current lifestyle have on the planet. So let's get to it!

Another Stupid Environmental Poem

By: Grace Nask

They were given a seed to plant, not because

Of their own merits, but because there was no one else.

This seed was one of a kind. No seed like it

Ever existed before, and none ever will

Again. They were told to take good care of it.

And in the beginning

They did.

. They planted it in the soil, gave it water, and waited.

In a few months, it grew into a tree.

That tree produced the best fruit, sweet and juicy. It was

Enough to provide for the families. But food

Wasn’t enough for them.

They also wanted to make a profit.

“What can we sell off this tree?” they wondered.

So they stripped off the bark and made money.

They poured out the sap and made money.

They cut off the branches and made money.

They ground up the leaves and made

More and more money.

Soon, they were rich from the

Destruction of the tree.

But in their haste,

They’d forgotten to take care of its beautiful seed.

In no time at all, the tree shriveled up

And died.

In the same time that they were rich they became

Poor, to the point where they didn’t have anything to eat.

But they didn’t despair. “We can find a new seed to harvest.

And if not, we will be given a new one,” they declared.

And they tried. Oh, how they tried. But no other seed

Could provide food for the whole family, much less

Make a profit. And as they began to perish, they waited

For a second seed to be handed out to them.

But none came. For the seed was one of a kind.

No seed like it ever

Existed before, and none ever will

Again. In waiting, much like the tree, they

Starved and died.

They’re gone now.

But this story doesn’t have to be ours.

Our seed is dying but not dead. We

Are hungry but not starving.

And out world can be saved, this we

Must believe, if only we

Take care of it.

So please, take care of our Earth.

It’s the only one any of us

Are going to get.
