Despite its unassuming title, Midnight Thiefs fantasy aspects lead to a compelling read. The plot moves at a quickened pace that entices suspense throughout the story. The foreshadowing is incredibly well written, with enough bits of plot line revealed to keep the reader flipping pages and forming theories of their own but not enough to make these theories accurate. The shocking revelation near the end startles even the most observant analyst. None of this could have been accomplished without the constant switching of point of view between Tristam and Kyra, the two main protagonists. This leads to insight with both characters and further characterization and development for all involved. The skillful way Blackbourne brings the two together with their point of views demonstrates complete control over the plot and adds a new dimension of suspense for the reader. This technique, however, extends beyond the two protagonists: the interwoven plot line between Pashla, Jack, and Tristam reveals exceptional craft within the story. A well written novel that shows the true meaning of the word style.

“There was no warning. No sound, no shout of alarm….By the time he [Tristam] caught up, Jack was facedown on the path….He [Jack] laughed as he dusted himself off. ‘Is that how you treat your injured comrades?’ // Tristam put on his sternest expression. ‘You deserved it. I should turn you in for shirking duty.”’

Recommended for anyone who enjoys mystery novels but wants a slight step out of their comfort zone.
